Why buy shredded clothing?

We don't want to pick on J. Crew, because (a) we've already done enough of that, and (b) there's no denying that the Obama kids looked adorable on inauguration day. What we're looking for is an honest answer to the question, because we can't figure out why someone would pay $85 for a shirt that is a few stains away from looking like you pulled it off a homeless guy. Where do you wear such things? Not at work. Not in social settings. At home on the weekends? Most of us presumably have enough clothes that we've made threadbare under our own power for that. We don't get it, so someone please help us out here and enlighten us.
