Whatever happened to style? (Apparently the Europeans took it?)
Chrysler's elegantly shot "Whatever Happened to Style?" commercial seems intended to tug at the car lover's heartstrings in an effort to restore the brand's image, but to us it has rather the opposite effect. As the string section rises behind a breathy voice-over, we're shown a series of glamourous people riding in, getting out of, and living with beautiful Chryslers of yesteryear. And then at the end, as this is after all an advertisement, Chrysler is forced to show us the cars they are building today. The bland, lifeless, terrible cars they are building today. The contrast is striking, jarring really. Presumably we're supposed to come away feeling that the brand has been restored to former glory. Our true reaction was more along the lines of "how the mighty have fallen."
