The polo evolved, under $50

While Sunspel, Kent Wang and Original Penguin are perennial favourites for classic fitted polo shirts, this year two of the most interesting new options put some twists on the classic formula.

UNIQLO x Michael Bastian — We wrote about Michael Bastian's collection of polos for Uniqlo earlier this month, and while there are over a dozen designs to suit nearly any style the one shown here is the clear winner. A medium-weight pique is given a broad self collar and an interesting looped button placket detail that is echoed on the sleeves and hem. At $20 a copy, what you want to do is buy the solid version in every colour that flatters you, plus at least one with fine stripes (we like the blue). And maybe a couple of backups. They've restocked at least three times already, so if you don't see your size keep checking back.

Massimo Dutti — Contrast plackets are almost always terrible (coughrobertgrahamcough) but the sophisticated colour pairings, choice of a classic menswear pattern and clean execution of the herringbone flap polo ($46) adds just the right amount of visual interest.
