Out of the Desert

Almost everyone could make good use of a pair of suede Clarks Desert Boots, the archetypal three-season casual chukka for over 60 years. But they have their limitations and there have been refinements to the art. While Clarks have moved their manufacturing to Vietnam and stuck to a rounded toe and the comfortable, quiet crepe sole we all know and love, some European makers have taken the concept slightly upscale with sleeker forms and/or treaded rubber soles that render them a bit less hazardous in the wet. The resulting boot is still wearable with denim and casual chinos but also at home with tailored khakis, dress trousers or even suits.

Some favourites: Massimo Dutti [$175]: Made in Portugal. Stacked brick red sole. Great value for the money. Sutor Mantellassi [$320-$440]: Made in Italy. Available in some interesting yet highly wearable colours. Peal & Co. for Brooks Brothers [$248]: Made in England. The only one shown here with a classic crepe sole. GF Ferré [$495]: Made in Italy. Appearing frequently at deep discounts on flash sale websites.
